About

The Strategic Buyer Network

BusinessWanted.com is a reviewed register of active acquisition requirements from UK buyers reviewed and approved by BusinessWanted.com. It exists to give owners of private companies, and the advisers who represent them, a discreet way to identify credible acquirers without publishing their business for sale.

What we publish

Every entry on the register represents a genuine, funded search by an experienced buyer. Requirements are set to a consistent standard so owners can compare mandates on the criteria that matter: sector, scale, geography, buyer type and readiness to transact, without wading through speculative enquiries.

Buyers include private acquirers, search funds, family offices, investment-backed trade consolidators and established corporates. We do not accept requirements that lack a defined investment thesis, verifiable funding position, or plausible route to completion.

How it works for owners

Browse the register by sector or explore the full platform of live mandates. Where a requirement genuinely fits, write to us in confidence quoting the mandate reference (for example BW000295) and a brief outline of the business. We forward suitable introductions to the acquirer under a standard confidentiality expectation.

Nothing is published about your business. Your enquiry is not indexed, listed or advertised. Ownership of the timing and the next step remains with you.

How it works for buyers

Acquirers submit a written mandate covering their investment criteria, funding structure, decision process and prior transaction experience. Once accepted the requirement is published to the register, kept current while the search is live, and retired when the mandate closes.

Enquiries reach the acquirer via our team, never a raw buyer contact form: so incoming approaches arrive filtered and referenced.

Who we work with

The register is built for people who are serious about buying, selling or advising on private businesses. It is not a casual marketplace and it is not designed for idle browsing.

  • Business owners considering a sale : including those not ready to run a public process and who want to see who is genuinely looking before deciding anything.
  • Shareholders and business partners : where options may include a full sale, partial sale, strategic investor, or one shareholder exiting while others stay.
  • Trade buyers, private investors and family offices , acquirers whose mandates read credibly and who behave professionally through an introduction.
  • Search funds and investment-backed operators , searchers with a clear investment thesis and defined deployment window.
  • Corporate finance advisers and brokers , professional intermediaries representing owners or acquirers, using the register as a demand-side reference.
  • Accountants, solicitors and trusted advisers , often the first person an owner speaks to about a possible sale, and one of the routes by which owners find the register.

Our approach

Most platforms in this market start with businesses for sale. We start with acquisition demand, who is actively looking, what they want, whether the requirement is credible enough to be useful. Every mandate we publish has passed a review gate on funding, thesis, adviser standing and readiness (see methodology and qualification and trust).

We prefer quality over volume. A register full of vague buyer requests and weak signals is clutter. We would rather publish fewer, more carefully reviewed mandates and let the fit come through. We work in controlled visibility rather than open marketing: some information is public, some is disclosed on request, and nothing about an owner's business is exposed without their authority.

We are not a brokerage and we are not trying to replace proper advisory work. We are trying to improve the front end of the deal: the stage where owners begin to understand what genuine demand looks like, before committing to a process.

Leadership

The register is maintained under the direction of Tony Vaughan, a UK M&A adviser with long experience of private company sales, acquisition searches and exit discussions in the SME market. The review standard reflects that experience: buyer intent matters more than empty traffic, confidentiality is often as important as visibility, and the right buyer is rarely the first buyer.

A short biography, transaction background and public writing are available at /tony-vaughan.

Independence

We are not a brokerage. We do not run auctions, take success fees on private sales, or represent either side in a transaction. The register earns its place by being useful to serious owners and disciplined buyers, and by declining everything that is not.
